Introduction to the case

In this evolving story, we’ll take apart the charges of sex crimes and rape convictions that have characterized Masterson’s life. As we plumb the depths of his past, though, unexpected twists reveal a scarred reputation and legal problems.

Background on Danny Masterson:

Danny Masterson, famous for his work on the ’70s Show and Men at Work, Netflix’s The Ranch. His background in the entertainment industry seemed to be clear. Before the legal mess ensued, Masterson’s talent had been recognized and he enjoyed success on screen.

Overview of his crimes

He has faced heinous allegations of sexual assault by multiple women.  He has been convicted on two of the three charges. The accusations against Masterson included charges of rape and sodomy as well as allegations that he had drugged his victims. Disturbing details emerged during the trials, which lasted two years in all.

His Denial

As his accusers recount the impact having been raped had on their lives, Masterson watched. He was wearing a suit and showed no obvious reactions to the accusers’ testimonies. Masterson: I plead not guilty on all three counts of forcible rape.

First Victim

Jane Doe No.1, the first woman who accused Masterson of forcing sodomy on her in 2002 and later raping her in 2003. She reported that he probably had injected something into the vodka they drank at a hotel bar. Then he went back to rape her while she was still feeling dizzy from alcohol consumption or sleeping pills. In the second case, she says that Masterson threw her into a Jacuzzi and then anally raped her in his room.

Second victim

Chrissie B, the second accuser, and a former Masterson girlfriend, testified that he had raped her while they were dating. She described an apparently never-ending pattern of sexual aggression followed by physical or emotional abuse and then added detail after detail about middle-of-the-night rape fantasies enacted as she slept peacefully in his arms.

Third Victim

The third accuser against Masterson was called Jane Doe No. 2. She testified that he disoriented her with a drink, penetrated her without consent in his Jacuzzi, and violently raped her from behind on his bed.

Trials

At Danny Masterson’s first trial for rape charges, his defense team fought hard to discredit the accusations based on disparities between statements made by accusers and what they told police when originally reporting their allegation. Deciding not to testify or present any witnesses, Masterson sought an early discharge of the case. It resulted in two hung juries and finally a declared mistrial. A second trial held in April 2023 found the victims’ accounts credible.

Victory and Sentencing

Five months after his April 2023 conviction on two of three rape charges, the rapist received sentencing. After being found guilty on two counts and the third charge ended in a hung jury, Masterson had to face 30 years to life imprisonment charges for raping two women between 2001 and 2003 at his Hollywood Hills residence. Eligible for parole only after serving 25 1/2 years, he’ll be 73 years old by then.
